What AI did here, and what it didn’t

AI was a tool in making this book and this site, the same way a word processor or a search engine is. A human did the thinking and a human checked every fact. It was primarily used to assist with my spelling and grammar.

The rest of the work stayed in human hands. Human editors revised the text with AI assistance, and a human designer made the cover art and the trailer, with AI used only on the transitions. No AI-generated audio, interviews, or video appears anywhere.

It also wrote the companion site you are reading now, the small redirect service that turns the QR codes in the book into working links, and I reviewed every line before it shipped.

Ultimately I found AI often more trouble than it was worth outside of grammar and spell checking. These tools fail in silent ways that can be difficult to spot, such as changing a minor date, or confusing one congressional hearing with another. AI-generated text also has a noticeable generic pattern that is often boring, unopinionated, and surface-level. As an editor, it is never finished, and will always propose one more change whether the sentence needs it or not. The real danger, for a book built on the record, is that it states wrong things with complete confidence. It will hand you a clean, well-formed sentence with a fabricated figure inside it, a small false detail that reads fine, parses fine, and is simply not true.
